San Bao Vegetarian is the nearest vegetarian eatery from the Ang Mo Kio MRT. It is a coffee shop hawker stall which sells several daily dishes. It surprisingly does not sell any economic Mee Hoon. It is always busy during breakfast and lunch time due to its proximity to the MRT station. Wednesday and Saturday are its peak working days due to its Roti Prata (as featured earlier on in our Roti Prata shoot out article).
San Bao serves Roti Prata every Wed and Sat. We advise you reach San Bao early else you will wait a long while. This is because there is only one old uncle grilling the Prata. We like the crispiness of the Prata. However, the curry is quite watery and lacks the punch.
Price: $0.50 per plain Prata (no minimum order)
We find the noodles soft and over-cooked. The wantons are also too small. More vegetables can be given.
We love the crispy mock chicken. However, the dish is really oily. Nevertheless, we find the chicken rice above average.
Yong Tau Foo
There are a limited range of ingredients to choose from. The brown sauce is not sweet. The soup has not much taste.
We love the slightly firm and tasty beancurd. However, the vegetarian ham and lean meat completely overwhelms the watery gravy.
If you are finding a place in Ang Mo Kio with cheap vegetarian eats, San Bao Vegetarian is an great choice. Not all the food are excellent and some are quite oily, but you cannot beat the location. If you come to eat the Roti Prata, you should avoid the breakfast and lunch hour as it will be a long good wait.
We walk over to San Bao Vegetarian from Ang Mo Kio MRT.
