Ricehouse Review

Ricehouse has been operating in Geylang for about 7 to 8 years. You cannot miss the restaurant in its vicinity as it plays Buddhist chantings all day long. The Zen-style decorations are supplemented with dark brown rectangular tables and chairs. Despite being located between Aljunied and Paya Lebar MRT, the restaurant which sells a variety of rice and noodle food items are still very busy during lunch and dinner hours. Interestingly, the person from whom you order your food has a dry sense of humour especially when you hesitate in your order.

The nickname of Ricehouse is 粥大王 translated in English as King of Porridge. The minced meat porridge is very popular and usually out of stock by early dinner hours. We find the porridge thick and tasty. However, it is oily with only a sprinkling of mock minced meat and braised peanuts. If Ricehouse is more generous with the ingredients for the porridge, we will have given a rating of 5 for the dish.

We like the smooth texture of the olive handmade noodles (橄榄手工面) though the sauce is slightly oily and does not have much taste. The noodles dish also has a variety of ingredients such as fishball, stuffed beancurd, vegetables, minced meat and mock ikan bilis.

Quality: 3.5/5
Price: $3.80

As for the vegetarian duck rice, the yam rice is really disappointing and lacks taste. The braised duck made of mushroom stock tastes alright but served cold. Overall, there is too much rice and too little ingredients.

Quality: 3/5
Price: $3.80

The stew lotus peanut soup is a simple dish with sliced lotus root and braised peanut. You will not find any mock meat in the soup. Some people may find the slight herbal bitter taste weird as lotus root soup tends to be slightly sweet. Also, the serving may be small for some people.

Quality: 3/5
Price: $3.80

Ricehouse sells a variety of side dishes including french fries and braised peanuts. We find the BBQ mock fish one of the best among the side dishes. The BBQ mock fish is adequately grilled, leaving the inside with a soft texture. The chilli paste on top of the mock fish is most splendid with the lime.

Quality: 4/5
Price: $3.80

We strongly recommend the minced pork porridge, olive handmade noodles and BBQ mock fish from Ricehouse.

You can get the details of the stall here.

Ricehouse is located about 1 bus stop from Aljunied MRT. We recommend that you take a stroll to the restaurant from Aljunied MRT.
