Today we will like to introduce Jian Kang Vegetarian Food at Bendeemer Food Centre. Besides the usual economical mee hoon, Jian Kang sells Mee Soto, Lor Mee, Laksa and Kway Chap every day and features an additional different dish for Tue (Chicken Rice), Wed (Duck Rice), Thu (Mee Siam) and Fri (Mee Rebus and Nasi Brani).
Mee Soto is not a common vegetarian dish which you will find elsewhere. Soto means soup in Indonesian and typically cooked with meat. The vegetarian Mee Soto from Jian Kang consists of mock sliced fishcake and meat (made up of mushroom). The soup is not spicy and reminds me of a diluted vegetarian mutton soup. The dish is filling and worth a try considering that I had not eaten vegetarian Mee Soto anywhere else in Singapore.
On the other hand, Lor Mee is a more commonly found dish among vegetarian stalls. Lor Mee is a Chinese noodle dish served in a thick starchy gravy. Jian Kang manages to find a balance between adding too much seasonings and making the gravy bland. Besides sliced mock fish cake as above, Jian Kang has added in fried dumplings for good measures.
Kway Chap is another common dish which you will find in vegetarian stalls. You will find beancurd and mock pig intestines in Jian Kang’s vegetarian Kway Chap. Normally I will try not to take mock pig intestines but Jian Kang manages to cook them quite soft which makes it bearable. I have come across mock pig intestines which is not as well cooked and thus quite stiff when eaten. The Kway Chap chilli is slightly sweet and complements the entire dish.
We strongly recommend the Nasi Brani which is its feature dish on Friday. The curry is especially fragrant. Contrary to the spicy looking curry in the photo, it is not that hot at all!
Lastly, you must try the Mee Siam from Jian Kang available every Thursday. The sour and spicy gravy is done to perfection. It is that great!
Jian Kang offers a wide range of local vegetarian dishes for a reasonable price. We found their food delicious and neither too oily nor salty. We wholeheartedly recommends this stall to our readers! You can get the details of the stall here.
Bendemeer Food Centre is just a stone throw away from Boon Keng MRT Station which makes it very convenient for vegetarians to have breakfast and lunch. Do take note that not all stalls open in the evening.
