“Young people, are you full time vegetarians?” The stall owner asked us after we have ordered a set meal from her. When we answered affirmatively, she informed us that her whole family are also full time vegetarian. The food served at the stall are the same as what she has fed her family. She confidently concludes that her food will be healthy for her customers.
Such confidence is definitely essential considering the competitive vegetarian food scene at the Circuit Road Food Centre. iVege is located at the section where there are many great vegetarian food. There is Meng Heng with its great Wanton noodles and Victor’s vegetarian with its delicious satays located opposite the stall. Xuan Miao with its hugely popular Ban Mian is its next door neighbour. Well you get the picture…
Despite such competition, we think that iVege may be able to survive in the long run as it craves out a niche with its dishes. iVege serves rice set meals which is not being offered by any vegetarian hawker stalls in the food centre.
Rice Set Meals
The rice set meals evolves around Bibimbap, Xiang Chun and Tom Yam. The base ingredients are similar among the three sets including carrot, cucumber and mushroom. The Xiang Chun set features Xiang Chun flavoured beancurd in the centre while Bibimbap features additional ingredients such as sweet corn sprouts, seaweed and Kimchi cabbage. Sadly, the Tom Yam rice set tastes bland. We have to add more chilli or eat the rice with the spicy Tom Yam soup.
Yam Rice with Buk Gu Tek Soup
iVege gets this dish wrong at all counts. The Buk Gu Tek soup is salty, peppery and too little. The dish only consists of deep fried yam rolls and rice. We like the slightly sour and spicy Sambal chilli. In the end, the dish is totally not worth the price.
Japanese Curry Chicken Cutlet Rice
We absolutely love the dish. It comes with a big crispy mock chicken cutlet and hot Japanese curry. The curry is not spicy so it is suitable for all people.
We recommend the Xiang Chun rice set, Bibimbap and Japanese Curry Chicken Cutlet Rice. The stall owner is still experimenting with its menu. Hence the dishes are not fixed for each day. We are quietly confident of its long term success at Circuit Road Food Centre and wish iVege all the best.
You can find out about the location and operating hours of iVege online.
Circuit Road Food Centre is quite far away from major public transport hubs. The quickest way is to take a bus from the nearby Macpherson MRT along the Circle Line or Aljunied MRT along the East-West Line. Do take note that almost all of its vegetarian hawker stalls (except for Choo Zai Zhai Vegetarian and Tang Leng Chay Vegetarian Food) open from late afternoon onwards.
