Da Shun at Bendeemer Food Centre serves an overlooked food category in Singapore vegetarian food scene. It sells only vegetarian Chinese finger food such as Chwee kueh (水粿) and Chee Cheong Fun(猪肠粉). Nevertheless, this stall offers a good alternative to your breakfast and lunch if you are sick of the usual vegetarian hawker food.
The Chwee Kueh (水粿) from Da Shun may look the same as what is available elsewhere. Yet it tastes bouncy when you put it in your mouth. Also, the radish seasoning is great without being overly salty. This dish is a great way to kick start a Singapore vegetarian breakfast!
Quality : 5/5
Price: $1 for 4
素豆粿 is deep fried dough with black-eyed peas. I like this interesting combination which is crispy on the outside and bouncy on the inside.
Quality : 5/5
Glutinous rice (糯米饭) from Da Shun is a simple affair. There is only peanuts and no mock meat found in this dish. If eaten on its own, this dish may not be able to fulfill one’s stomach. Moreover, the rice is not as sticky as I will like it to be. It feels like that I am eating a sticky form of fried rice.
Quality : 3/5
Chee Cheong Fun (猪肠粉) on the other hand is excellent. It is usually made from a thick, flat sheet of steamed rice flour made into rolls. It has the same texture as the Chwee Kueh (水粿). The sweet brown bean sauce and sesame seed enhance this otherwise ordinary dish tremendously.
Price: $1.60 for 2 rolls
We strongly recommend the Chwee Kueh and Chee Cheong Fun from Da Shun. You can get the details of the stall here.
Bendemeer Food Centre is just a stone throw away from Boon Keng MRT Station which makes it very convenient for vegetarians to have breakfast and lunch. Do take note that not all stalls open in the evening.
